U.S. Consumer Confidence Falls 6.7 Points to 81.9 in September

The Conference Board said its U.S. Consumer Confidence Index fell 6.7 points to 81.9 in September from 88.6 in August. Its Present Situation Index, which tracks consumers' assessment of current business and labor conditions, declined 7.9 points to 109.3, while the Expectations Index, reflecting their short-term outlook, fell 5.9 points to 63.6. The September survey drew responses between September 1 and September 23, and the board released the results on September 29. Both the current-conditions and outlook measures moved lower in the latest monthly reading.
