Kiir Dissolves South Sudan Unity Government Ahead of December Election

President Salva Kiir dissolved South Sudan's transitional unity government on Tuesday evening and appointed a caretaker administration ahead of elections scheduled for December 22. A Republican Order announced on state broadcaster SSBC removed the first vice president and four other vice presidents, relieved ministers, and dissolved the national legislature and state governments. Kiir remains president during the electoral period, while caretaker ministers oversee departments. The move followed his signing of amendments to the National Elections Act as South Sudan prepares for its first general election since independence.
