Review Finds Most Mizrahi Heritage Curriculum Recommendations Unimplemented

A decade after the Biton Committee urged Israel's education system to deepen instruction on Sephardi and Mizrahi Jewish heritage, a new review found that most recommendations were not implemented. The committee had proposed dedicated study hours, compulsory authors in literature, heritage tours, museum visits and an annual NIS 250 million budget for five years. Educators and heritage leaders said changes were largely cosmetic or dependent on temporary funding. The Education Ministry disputed that assessment, saying it had integrated the material across curricula, teaching resources, matriculation exams, teacher training and heritage centers, including the new compulsory Heritage Paths subject in elementary schools.
