Myanmar Military Airstrike on Monastery Retreat Kills 14, Opposition Group Says

A Myanmar military fighter jet bombed a Buddhist monastery compound in Swe Le Oh village, Myaung Township, Sagaing Region, about 75 kilometers west of Mandalay, on the morning of August 21. The strike came during Buddhist Sabbath observance and a weeklong meditation retreat attended by more than 100 people. The Civil Defense and Security Organization of Myaung Township said 14 people were killed, including three women, and 20 were wounded; earlier local accounts said the monastery's abbot was among at least 12 dead. The military did not immediately comment; it has said it strikes only legitimate targets. A UN investigative body reported days earlier that military aerial attacks were escalating.
