TikTok and ByteDance Agree to $400 Million Children's Privacy Settlement

TikTok, ByteDance and affiliated entities agreed to a $400 million settlement resolving U.S. government litigation over alleged compliance failures under the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act. The Justice Department said on August 21 that TikTok will pay $300 million immediately and another $100 million when a prior consent decree against predecessor Musical.ly is vacated, making the resolution one of the largest recoveries in a COPPA case. The department said TikTok has strengthened safeguards for younger users, age controls and parental oversight since the suit was filed in 2024. The resolved claims remain allegations, with no determination of liability.
