U.S. Imposes 50% Tariffs on Selected Canadian Goods After Talks Collapse

The United States began applying additional 50% duties to selected Canadian alcoholic beverages, dairy products and motor vehicles at 12:01 a.m. ET on August 22, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Canada suspended negotiations and recalled its team after late changes in the U.S. position, Prime Minister Mark Carney said. Ottawa says the affected trade is worth about C$28 billion and will impose dollar-for-dollar counter-tariffs on steel, dairy, appliances, agricultural equipment, pulp and paper, and electronics from September 8. Details of Canada's measures are still pending.
