Hobart Council Sends Whole-Home Short-Stay Limits to State Planning Commission

Hobart's council has voted to send a planning amendment restricting new whole-home short-stay accommodation permits to the Tasmanian Planning Commission for final approval. The proposal would prevent about 20,000 dwellings, roughly 90% of the city's housing, from being wholly converted to visitor accommodation in general residential, inner residential and low-density residential zones. Existing permits would remain valid, while the CBD and Battery Point would be excluded. Public consultation produced 56 submissions, with 15 supporting and 41 opposing; supporters cited rental availability and affordability, while opponents raised tourism, property-rights and small-business concerns.
