The PKK leadership in Kandil says it’s been in contact with Ocalan and the Turkish state as part of the peace process. Not a huge surprise given varied forms of contact in prior peace talks, but does add a new layer of certainty to the process.
First real test of system Mazlum Abdi agreed to in dissolving SDF & integrating w/Syrian state (& personally taking a position w/President). Abdi’s from Kobani, & the ‘Rojava Revolution’ that led to (now ended) Kurd self-rule began here. In other words, he’s got to balance a lot.
Another part of the PKK gets absorbed by the peace deal between Turkey and the PKK. Do local demobilized fighters get absorbed by Iraqi army?
Excellent interview by @banuguven with @MazloumAbdi on issues like what happens to the (non Syrian) Pkk militants who went to Rojava, joined the YPG & later SDF. Some have already left (as previously reported by @amberinzaman ); others to fall under Ankara-PKK negotiations.
The first female Kurdish rock back in Iraqi Kurdistan in 1980. Incredible story and one that demands more info!
Looking forward to this! Highly recommend watching Mazlum, a new Syrian presidential adviser, and former PKK militant/leader of the Kurd alliance with U.S. and the Rojava Revolution. It’s quite a transformation.
No question about it, the PKK's decision to go back to war in 2015 was a historic mistake that cost lives (on both sides) with no gain -- in fact causing Kurds to lose the political control they exerted over the southeast through then local councils & mayors.
Very sad to hear about the death of Mehdi Zana, long time Kurdish activist & mayor of Diyarbakir on the eve of the 1980 coup, later imprisoned in the ‘infamous’ DBakir military prison & then years in exile. Condolences to Leyla Zana & their children.
Good point — is it 50,000 like Kalkan said in 2023 or around half that as Karayilan has just said. A lot of deaths were never even recorded (see Blood & Belief for more on that). I’d guess Karayilan’s is more accurate based on actual PKK reports… yet still inaccurate.
