One of the short stories included in my forthcoming book (publishing Nov 2026 in Australia with PanMacmillan) follows an anthropologist professor whose main interest is studying cemeteries. He spends most of his days in his old jeep, searching for graveyards across Kurdistan. A good portion of his academic work is sitting in the silence of graveyards, listening and contemplating. He sums up his research philosophy to his students every semester in their first class: “In a land ravaged by colonialism, the graveyard embodies forgotten history and identity. The graveyard embodies everything. Archives and museums and institutions like that are manifestations of colonialism, but this is our job: to draw out the radical ideas buried in those archives. Even in a pile of garbage, you can always find a gold coin.” The professor is right: certainly, his approach is to introduce counter-memory, to unearth forgotten history and to understand it from bottom up."
