It’s that time of the year again. Make no mistake: Israelis have not even begun to process the trauma and the grief. This is no excuse for any war crime whatsoever. But it is still a solid and cataclysmic truth. Ignore it at your peril.
One of our leading pro-democracy activists posted for the New Year a pivotal segment of my father’s parting speech, known as Amos Oz’s last lecture. It’s aimed at the Israeli public, and it’s mind bogglingly hopeful. “When courageous leadership comes along and says, “Guys, this is it. It’s time for the operation. Deep down, you’ve known this all along.” When will it happen? I can’t say. Who will it be? I can’t say; it’s impossible to know. Not only don’t I know — he or she doesn’t know yet either. It will come as a surprise not only to us, but to the leader too. Think of the irony of history. In 1967, Levi, son of Deborah, Eshkol — a Gordonist and Tolstoyan from Kibbutz Degania — found himself ruling over the largest Hebrew kingdom since King David. Levi Eshkol! Practically a pacifist, a vegetarian, a Tolstoyan, a Gordonist, a man of peace. Exactly ten years later came the former Betar Youth Movement Comissioner in Poland, Jabotinsky’s man, Menachem Begin, and dismantled this empire for the sake of peace. So don’t talk to me about “irreversible” facts on the ground. Only death is irreversible. And that’s something I’ll soon find out firsthand. I don’t know whether I’ll be able to report back to you about it, but I’ll test it out anyway. Nothing is irreversible. It’s about leadership. It’s about telling people what they already know, deep down.”
As a constant reader, I saw the disgusting cancellation of Israeli terror and war victims by the world’s major liberal media, most of all by @nytimes, every single day since 7 October 2023. This hasn’t diminished the suffering of innocent Palestinians. But it profoundly diminished my trust in the world’s major liberal media. And it sure as hell diminishes the Israeli moderates’ chance of restoring humanity to our own traumatized people.

Should have been done decades ago. For the Palestinians’ sake, and, not least, for Israel’s sake.
