2.6 Million Israeli Students Begin the 2026–27 School Year

About 2.6 million students began the 2026–27 school year across Israel on Tuesday. The Education Ministry calendar says official kindergartens, elementary schools, middle schools and high schools opened during each institution’s first regularly scheduled period, with recognized non-official kindergartens and elementary schools following the same schedule. The opening brought pupils back to classrooms nationwide after the summer break. Schools are also managing continuing teacher shortages, particularly in mathematics, science and English, with some principals merging classes or relying on partial staffing to complete their timetables.
