Fiji Declares HIV Outbreak a National Crisis as 2025 Diagnoses Reach 2,016

Fiji’s Cabinet has declared the country’s HIV outbreak a national crisis under emergency powers after considering a taskforce response paper. Information Minister Lynda Tabuya said the government is funding a broader response through the national budget and development partners, while Health Minister Ratu Atonio Lalabalavu said the ministry must scale up its work. The Health Ministry recorded 2,016 new diagnoses in 2025, 27% more than 1,583 in 2024, with two-thirds among people aged 20–34. It said 3,535 people were living with HIV at year-end and 1,979 were receiving antiretroviral treatment.
