The #Trump admin's war on #Iran hasn't gone the way it was intended -- the latest #Houthi advances are yet more evidence that. But if it continues this way, we'll be creating the ingredients that risk killing huge hope for progress in places like #Syria. That's an #ISIS dream.
All of this is hard enough for a nation & state climbing out of more than 50yrs of abject misery & failed governance -- but then you have a [US-imposed] war on the #MiddleEast region. That war, and its persistence, is going to have MANY unintended regional effects. Serious ones.
On the bright side, #Syria's people can gather on the streets and protest today -- and they're not massacred for doing so. That's good. BUT it doesn't fix the reality that there's a HUGE gap between government messaging & public perception/understanding about the recovery path.
The miraculous lifting of Western sanctions from #Syria -- at record-breaking speed -- offered a signal of hope for many. BUT again, removing restrictions doesn't create money, or build infrastructure. That requires hard work, huge reforms, and years upon years of progress.
When #Assad's regime fell, #Syria was staring at an economic black hole. But the transitional gov't hasn't been nearly honest & open enough with its population about how long it's going to take to climb out of bankruptcy, decrepit infrastructure, and mass destruction.
Then you have the externally-imposed effects of 6 months of #Iran war -- driving up prices, squeezing supply & constant volatility. #Syria produces 33% of the fuel it requires to keep going -- making it overwhelmingly reliant on external supply... and prices. Simple economics.
Domestically on the one hand, #Syria is broke -- after 53yrs of #Assad corruption & 14yrs of mass destructive war imposed on it by #Assad. On the other hand, Syrians for decades lived in an unaffordable "subsidy culture" & expect the same today. But there's no $ to do so..
With petroleum prices peaking amid continued #Iran regional war, #Syria was forced to hike its domestic fuel prices on Sunday -- with petrol/diesel/gas rising by 25-40%. It triggered major protests & demands for Energy Minister dismissal. A huge challenge imposed on #Syria. https://t.co/o1a4XWYY3Q
NEW - after @Microsoft & @Google products release freely into #Syria’s user market, @ChatGPT has joined the show, also now available for use nationwide without any VPN. More opening, post-SST removal. https://t.co/FYXs97jLqK
Amid riots by Kurdish youth in #Kobani last night, Kurdish prisoners in the local prison (still run by Kurdish authorities & not yet under MOI command) set fire to their bedding -- triggering a fast-spreading fire that killed 7. A major gov't effort is underway to calm tensions.
The killer of Sami al-Sheikhmous (former #SDF, integrated into the MOD) has been caught tonight. Yet at the same time, Kurdish rioters attacked several gov't MOI posts in #Kobani tonight, triggering major tensions -- Kurdish MOI blocked gov't MOI reinforcements from arriving.
The MOD's Assistant Minister of Defense for Eastern #Syria, Sipan Hamo -- himself a former #SDF leader -- calls for an end to "all provocative media rhetoric that incites violence and killing." He says the MOI has already made arrests & more will come. https://t.co/LDQdvMMxLP
Tribal gunmen shot dead a Kurdish fighter newly integrated into #Syria's MOD #Hasakeh brigade earlier today, accusing him of unspecified crimes. The MOI has retrieved his body & ID'd the suspect, who's now on the run. Kurdish protesters are on the streets demanding revenge. https://t.co/BtV37omAmE
If you're interested in #MiddleEast art & culture, you'll want to attend the opening of the @MiddleEastInst's latest exhibition: - El Marsam: Modern & Contemporary Art from #Egypt More than 40 celebrated works are on show, tracing nearly 100yrs of art: https://t.co/3p7M28VgBX
A huge disinformation campaign has been running for days now, claiming #Suwayda is "under siege." Total fiction. Local sources & NGOs are all reporting normal traffic movement -- people & commerce -- along the #Damascus-#Suwayda highway. If anything, there's been an increase. https://t.co/vajMHoEKVs
The #Syria government's governor to #Suwayda has begun a series of meetings with provincial education & service officials from inside #Suwayda. But their identities are being blurred out from photos. Why? Because they'd risk 'disappearing' if Hikmat al-Hijri's gunmen found out. https://t.co/6KXfoZJ2xl
The @USTreasury delegation also met with #Syria's Finance Minister for discussions on further "strengthening financial cooperation" and "integrating #Syria into the global financial system." Step by step, things are moving forward after *decades* of isolation. https://t.co/w1bmcpwLiT
A delegation from @USTreasury is in #Damascus, #Syria today. They met this morning with the Central Bank, alongside senior officials from Syrian banks & exchange companies. With the SST out of the way, the path ahead for financial re-connection is very much in play. https://t.co/Aa4pxQ9HSN
NEW -- #Syria's Governor to #Suwayda Mustafa Bakkour says he met with a "committee" coming from #Suwayda city to discuss planning a facilitated return of displaced people to their villages & homes in gov't-held areas. No full deal on the details/logistics, but a good sign. https://t.co/Kwopcef7Iu
NEW -- 3 more #Syria citizens were released from arbitrary detention in #Israel today. That makes 14 released in 6 weeks (x3 on Sep 9; x4 on Aug 26; x3 on Aug 19; x2 on Aug 5; x2 on July 29). There is very clearly something at play here. These releases have come from nowhere.
We're 48hrs from the 9/11 anniversary, so a new onslaught of articles is emerging & as usual, they miss the wood from the trees -- claiming either that #AlQaeda is "dead" or it's secretly preparing a huge resurgence. Both designed for clicks. Both lacking a grip with reality.
Around 15,000 women in #Syria have signed up to join the Interior Ministry's police forces. Hundreds have passed through training already, with most trainers being reconciled former #Assad regime employees. @subhash_anagha reports -- https://t.co/SunnIUsfy6
Elections, elections, elections. #Netanyahu traveled into sovereign #Syria territory today, declaring: "#Damascus is here... we control the entire area... this is total control never seen before... one of our major accomplishments, but there's still more work to do." https://t.co/76Zl6Pu6zs
NEW -- for the first time in 15yrs, the IAEA (@iaeaorg) has just removed #Syria from its list of non-compliant states. This follows a year of IAEA missions to #Syria & #Damascus' active facilitation of access to all former #Assad regime nuclear sites.
Drug traffickers in #Suwayda launched 4 waves of balloons carrying ~500,000 captagon pills to #Jordan overnight -- all were intercepted. Jordan captured a drug trafficker trying to cross over hours earlier. That's 1.05 million pills (~$15 million street value) seized in a week. https://t.co/wJcRNimsRp
