A busy start to the political week here in Kyiv: Ukraine's prosecutor general, Ruslan Kravchenko, appointed by Zelenskyy last year with backing of his then-chief of staff now accused of corruption Andriy Yermak, has resigned and fled Ukraine after becoming embroiled in a corruption scandal of his own. Kravchenko's appointment was part of Zelenskyy's ultimately disastrous effort to bring Ukraine's independent anti-corruption agencies NABU and SAPO under tight presidential control through Kravchenko's oversight — a move that backfired spectacularly last summer, triggering the country's first and largest public protests since Russia's full-scale invasion. Now Kravchenko himself is facing scrutiny from those very agencies, who've charged several of his subordinates in the prosecutor general's office in an alleged fraud scheme. Before resigning and fleeing, he moved against their directors by signing off charges against them. Zelenskyy has called on parliament to swiftly approve Kravchenko's dismissal.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy has imposed sanctions on his former press secretary turned critic Iuliia Mendel, according to a presidential decree published Sunday evening. Mendel has increasingly peddled numerous falsehoods and rumors about Zelenskyy and Ukraine that echo Russian state propaganda since she was sacked before the full blown war began. Recently she pushed many of these in an interview with Tucker Carlson that was widely derided, especially in Ukraine. She left Ukraine several months ago and resides in the US.

Russia is escalating strikes on Ukraine’s railway including passenger trains. The state railway company says some passengers suffered shrapnel wounds in the latest attack. Trains have been the most reliable form of public and mass transport — and crucial to evacuations — throughout Russia’s war but are no longer so because of the intensifying drone attacks targeting them.
