We have arrived at a point where a pregnant woman being shot and killed by Israeli forces is no longer a headline. It is merely another footnote in a modern-day genocide the world has taught itself to live with. https://t.co/a7qUVD80Ym
It took me some time to decide whether I should post this tweet, shared by the Gujarat handle of Narendra Modi’s BJP (now deleted) But perhaps it needs to be seen. The imagery is hardly subtle: the tired trope of a white woman in revealing clothes, placed in a bar, aimed at a woman we all know. The innuendo against the woman leader, the humiliation is deliberate. It has been shared as whats app forward over the last 15 years with great glee by the right wing ecosystem. This, in 21st-century India, is the public language of the ruling party. In a country where sexual violence against women is reported with horrifying regularity, Narendra Modi recently expressed his shock and outrage at the language used by women protesters. Apparently, the dignity of women is sacred only when women speak in ways the Prime Minister finds objectionable When his own party deploys sexualised imagery to demean a woman, that outrage is nowhere to be found. And this is not some anonymous troll account operating from the fringes of the internet. This was posted by the BJP handle of Gujarat , Narendra Modi’s home state. As India hosts the BRICS summit in Delhi, this too is an image of the country its ruling party presents to the world: lectures on the dignity of women from the podium, misogyny from the party account.
Twenty-five years after 9/11, a Muslim could become the mayor of New York City. And still have to pass America’s oldest test for Muslims: prove your loyalty, denounce terrorism, reassure everyone you’re one of the few “good ones.” https://t.co/XmXuhh7nU2
The bodies of seven students have just been pulled from the rubble in New Delhi. Meanwhile, the BJP prepares for Prime Minister Modi’s birthday. https://t.co/zo2srGOAs5
Whatever faith I have in Ed Miliband personally and I appreciate all he has tried to do here, I cannot trust a British government that has looked the other way through three years of genocide. https://t.co/0YJrG8uAim
Abdallah and Maryam killed in an airstrike in Southern Lebanon yesterday https://t.co/N71KHNCh6e
It took the murder of 20 thousand children in Gaza for the British government to call it what it is https://t.co/QiSDdRnfjN
Ed Miliband expresses deep sense of shame over the destruction in Gaza “The British government agrees that there is ethnic cleansing of Palestinians in areas of the West Bank, perpetrated by settler terrorists” https://t.co/6AgxdEuqUW
Rahul Gandhi and the opposition’s real test ahead will be showing ordinary Indians that examination fraud, unemployment, police impunity and the persecution of dissenters are not isolated injustices, but symptoms of the same institutional decay. https://t.co/gGLON8BGVb
Just an errant bomb that mistakenly kill 6 people, including a toddler https://t.co/K1c8fe4ORq
Six killed as hostel building collapses in Delhi. This is not an aberration, but a norm in a country where the Prime Minister is more obsessed with his personal image than the welfare of the nation. So he will keep harping about Urban Naxals because the protests hurt his image
Sunday read. For twelve years, Narendra Modi ruled India as an invincible politician, almost “non-biological.” But for the first time, he is behaving like a worried man. His language is more defensive. His propaganda more conspicuous. https://t.co/NEhtleFVG4 https://t.co/rpzH1E4783
I love that we continue to be surprised that a bigot like Swatantra Bharadwaj who claims to have cracked an activist’s skull, was invited by the Prime Minister to his swearing-in ceremony. You really don’t know your Prime Minister yet, do you?
Latest for @PostOpinions. Gandhi is outgrowing the propaganda that defined him. But his test will be to show Indians that examination fraud, unemployment, police impunity and persecution of dissenters are not isolated injustices but symptoms of the same institutional decay. https://t.co/wjbyBy6sKg
My latest for The Washington Post, on Rahul Gandhi’s political transformation. For years, he was the easiest politician in India to ridicule. But now Rahul Gandhi is speaking a language that increasingly resonates with a large section of the country @PostOpinions https://t.co/zSPyVruqpi
Gloria Steinem made feminism a language of freedom for generations of women. I feel incredibly lucky to have known her, and luckier still to have called her a friend. Goodbye, dear Gloria, rest in power !!
For twelve years, Narendra Modi has cultivated the image of a leader incapable of doubt. He does not retreat, apologise or explain. He announces. He commands. Every victory is presented not merely as an electoral mandate but as proof of his indispensability to India. His government has survived economic distress, a catastrophic pandemic, mass protests and repeated allegations of democratic backsliding without permitting the prime minister’s aura of invincibility to visibly crack. Something however has changed in the past six months. https://t.co/VPLtaKtmpY
For twelve years, India’s prime minister built his power on fear and the myth of his own invincibility. A generation now mocking him on the streets and online is beginning to puncture both. https://t.co/DQsfiYVvEt https://t.co/5V3thYZiHG

Three reported gang rapes of minors in the last 48 hours. But apparently, our priority is dealing with “urban Naxals.”
