fwiw I think the actual reason leaders of AI frontier labs suddenly seem to agree to pace AI development is (a) safety measures are currently so crap that they're likely to end up in court if not jail, and they all agree that no one wants that (b) they see no major new model advancement coming up soon anyway and need an excuse (c) shift in public opinion the talk of existential threat is mostly there to keep you distracted and the stock market happy.

The German startup Magnotherm is pioneering a new type of cooling technology: Instead of compressing a refrigerant gas, as usual, their fridges use metals that heat up in magnetic fields and cool when the field is removed. This can effectively be used to move the heat from one location (eg inside the fridge) to another (outside the fridge). The idea itself is not new, it goes back to the 19th century, but Magnotherm is the first to make the step to commercial use. Earlier this year, they announced that the German supermarket chain REWE will deploy their new fridges in 10 stores. The company says their system uses 15% less electricity and avoids harmful chemicals. The technology can in principle also be used for air conditioning, but so far no one has developed a prototype. Yes indeed. Because if physicists would sit down and think about what "extraordinary claims" actually means, they would realize that all their thousands of nonsense theories for dark matter and dark energy and the origin of the universe etc are "extraordinary claims" without any "extraordinary evidence" and they should never have appeared in the scientific literature. Why? Because these ideas contain loads of assumptions which are UNNECESSARY to explain the existing evidence. These unnecessary assumptions are the "extraordinary claims" that have no "extraordinary evidence". Physicists are cooking up increasingly contrived "dark sectors" with self-interactions and dozens of particles and multiple phases and portals and what not. It's not science. It's mathematical fiction. Extraordinary claims. No extraordinary evidence. They then try to justify this with the idea that "it's testable, therefore it's science". But: NONO, YOU HAVE IT BACKWARD. POPPER SAID IF IT'S NOT TESTABLE, THEN IT'S NOT SCIENCE. This does NOT mean that if it's testable, it's science. The past 40 years of bullshit publications in the foundations of physics are almost entirely based on this trivial logical mistake. Just because it's testable doesn't make it scientific! It's a basic misunderstanding of the philosophy of science that no one wants to fix because then they'd have to stop publishing their drivel. And I've pointed this out for a decade already, so at this point they can't even pretend they don't know that what they do is scientific rubbish. They know. They continue it anyway because most of the public hasn't caught up on it. This is why you see idiotic new dark matter proposals and similar nonsense in press releases every other day. It's of course the same with most UAP explanations, just with less maths. The warp drive is a good example because that the microscopic object that moves through the atmosphere has anything to do with "warp drives" is completely irrelevant. The relevant part is that it somehow dumps energy into the atmosphere.
