August 13, 2026 I wish to join the people of China in mourning the passing of Premier Zhu Rongji, a great man whom I personally held in high esteem. Even after his quiet retirement, the world still remembers him as an “economic czar” of China who played instrumental and pivotal roles that led to the spectacular transformation of China into the global economic superpower that we see today. I recalled the first 15-minute courtesy call with him, which went into a full-hour meeting before I became Prime Minister. Since then, I had the privilege of developing a personal rapport and working relationship with him, which was built on a shared vision for a prosperous Asia, mutual trust, and a firm commitment to advance Thailand–China relations further. We remember well his visit to Thailand in 2001, where Premier Zhu supported bilateral currency swap talks and committed to purchase Thai goods when Thailand was still yet to emerge from the financial crisis.
