Iranian Lawmaker Tells Riyadh the Mecca Defense Pact Will Not Bring It Security

Ebrahim Rezaei, a member of the Iranian parliament's National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, dismissed the mutual defense pact that Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Pakistan signed in Mecca on Friday. Writing on X in Tehran's first reaction, he said a paper agreement with Turkey and Pakistan will not bring the Saudis security, just as decades of one-sided dependence on the Americans failed to do so. He urged Riyadh to change its policies so it need not beg others for security. The pact treats an armed attack on any of the three states as an attack on all. It was signed as Saudi Arabia braced for attacks by Iran-backed militias in Iraq and Yemen.
