The most important part of today's @USTreasury announcement was not aimed only at Tehran. It was aimed at the governments that have kept Tehran solvent for years. The stated objective of @SecScottBessent is to sever every economic lifeline that sustains the tyrannical regime until Tehran stands alone. What makes today additive to the four months of Operation Economic Fury is breadth and timing. The measures reach technology, gold, aviation, shipping, banking and digital assets. Each country still doing this business has been given a defined window to shut it down, with enforcement to follow if it does not. Economic engagement of any kind with this regime now brings a severe American response. For years, governments treated quiet commerce with Tehran as a manageable cost of doing business, handled discreetly and denied publicly. That era is over. The escalation is pointed at the right targets. Iran has absorbed sanctions for four decades and learned to live inside them. Its enablers have never been asked to absorb anything, and the message to them today was that they should not test the United States. Asked what the President is after, Secretary Bessent described it as the economic asphyxiation of the regime. The campaign is meant to gather force with every day that follows, and Secretary Bessent said more sanctions are coming shortly. The countries still deciding whether to comply are not choosing once. They will be choosing again next week, and the week after that, against pressure that keeps rising. These countries have been warned. They should follow the lead of the United Arab Emirates.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian is reportedly calling for an end to the war with the United States. The question is whether he has enough power to convince Iran’s leadership to take that path. I highly doubt it. The regime is deeply divided. Pezeshkian is arguing for an exit while senior military figures call for escalation and the IRGC continues to amass power. My assessment: even if Pezeshkian wants the kind of deal President Trump expects (also very doubtful), as of now he cannot deliver anything close to it. Still, something to watch closely before Washington’s sanctions announcement Monday.
