Knesset Opens Nationwide Commercial Radio Market

The Knesset passed Amendment 50 to the Second Authority Law in second and third readings, with 31 lawmakers supporting and 17 opposing. The law authorizes nationwide analog commercial-radio licenses without geographic limits, awarded by public tender for 18-year terms and reviewed after six and 12 years. Tenders may proceed only if the Frequencies Committee finds spectrum for at least two licensees and determines that taking a frequency from an existing nationwide broadcaster would not materially harm it. Existing regional-radio franchises are extended through December 31, 2032, giving operators time to prepare for the new market.
