UK Launches £28 Million Ultra-Long-Duration Energy Storage Challenge

The UK government launched a £28 million Ultra-Long Duration Energy Storage Challenge on August 20 to support technologies capable of supplying clean electricity for at least 100 hours. The grants will focus on electrochemical systems such as advanced batteries and on underground hydrogen storage and release. UK Research and Innovation also opened a competition offering up to £3 million for project-development studies into electrochemical technologies that have not yet been commercialized at scale. The challenge completes a £102 million group of clean-energy programs and forms part of a research accelerator that the government says will invest at least £500 million by 2030.
