Courtroom-sketch editorial illustration of Donald Trump and Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva standing together and smiling in an ornate government room, rendered in warm ochre and slate-blue pastel strokes.

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and U.S. President Donald Trump opened a new negotiating channel on tariffs during an August 21 phone call. Brazil's Ministry of Development, Industry, Commerce and Services said U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer contacted the ministry after the call to arrange a meeting aimed at restarting negotiations. Brazilian minister Márcio Elias Rosa and Foreign Ministry representatives are expected to meet the U.S. trade office, with the date still to be set. No tariff reduction or broader trade agreement was announced.
