Italy Detains German Rescue Ship Sea-Watch 5 for 45 Days, Fines NGO 7,500 Euros

Italy imposed a 45-day detention and a 7,500 euro fine on the Sea-Watch 5, a German-flagged civilian rescue vessel, Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi announced on August 22. He said the ship again failed to meet the legal obligations required during operations at sea, and that rescues must be coordinated by competent states rather than by NGOs. Sea-Watch confirmed the sanction and said it did not inform Libya's maritime rescue coordination centre of its August 13 rescue of six people in international waters, notifying Italy and neighbouring European states instead. The organisation said an unidentified vessel approached soon after the rescue and its occupants pointed a rifle at the crew.
