Federal Judge Rules Pentagon’s Anthropic Blacklist Illegal and Baseless

Courtroom-sketch editorial illustration of an aerial view of the Pentagon, its central courtyard, surrounding roads, Potomac River, and distant Washington skyline, rendered in warm ochre and slate-blue pastel strokes.

U.S. District Judge Rita F. Lin ruled that Pentagon measures designating Anthropic a national-security supply-chain risk and barring federal agencies and defense contractors from using the company violated the Constitution and federal law. The 59-page order granted Anthropic summary judgment on its First Amendment, due-process and principal Administrative Procedure Act claims. Lin found the government’s four-page rationale lacked a valid factual basis and that officials acted to make an example of Anthropic for criticizing the government. She called the measures “illegal and baseless” and said a separate order on relief would follow.
