Iceland Holds Referendum on Resuming European Union Accession Talks

Icelanders are voting Saturday in a national referendum on whether the country should resume accession negotiations with the European Union. The ballot offers “yes” and “no,” and its result is advisory under Article 123(3) of Iceland’s Elections Act. People eligible for parliamentary and presidential elections may vote; advance voting began July 27, and municipalities set election-day polling hours. The National Electoral Commission said votes will be counted publicly at constituency counting stations after polls close, while its election-day service operates from 08:30 to 22:30 local time.
