Zambia Detains Election Runner-Up and Running Mate in Treason Probe

Zambian police said they detained presidential election runner-up Brian Mundubile and his running mate, Makebi Zulu, after recording warn-and-caution statements from both men in an investigation into alleged treason. Police said investigators questioned them on Thursday and that inquiries continued while they remained in custody. The two surrendered after Mundubile had stayed at United Nations premises following the August 13 election, according to AP. President Hakainde Hichilema was declared reelected with about 60% of the vote, while Mundubile received about 38% and disputed the result; neither detainee has been reported convicted or formally charged.
