Zambia Police spokesman Godfrey Chilabi confirmed that Brian Mundubile, his running mate Makebi Zulu and 16 others were formally charged with treason on August 29. Mundubile, the runner-up in the August 13 presidential election, and Zulu have been in police custody since August 27. Lawyer Milner Katolo said the 18 defendants face one count and were being held at several Lusaka police stations. He called for the state to bring them before a court within 48 hours; the charge sheet and specific alleged acts were not publicly available.
