African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf on Tuesday condemned violence and any attempt to seize power by force in Niger after armed clashes struck sensitive sites in Niamey overnight August 28–29. The AU said the attacks caused casualties and significant material damage but gave no numbers and named no perpetrator. Youssouf urged all actors to exercise restraint and offered condolences to victims’ families. He said the AU is ready to support the restoration of constitutional order, peace and stability in Niger and across the Sahel.
