Spain Reports Mediterranean Surface-Water Record of 28.54°C

Spain's State Meteorological Agency said the Mediterranean's average surface-water temperature reached 28.54°C on August 13, the highest in records dating to at least 1940. AEMET said the basin broke daily temperature records during practically all of August. The measurement covers the Mediterranean as a whole, not only waters near Spain. It called the August 13 figure the highest basin-wide reading in more than eight decades. The agency published the finding on September 6 after comparing the reading with its long-running record of daily sea-surface temperatures across the basin.
