Five Ansaru Suspects Plead Not Guilty in Oyo School-Abduction Trial

Five men accused of links to Ansaru pleaded not guilty in Abuja to seven terrorism-related counts over the May 15 abduction of 39 pupils and seven teachers from three schools in Oriire, Oyo State. Prosecutors allege the defendants conspired in and aided the kidnapping, concealed advance knowledge, and bear responsibility for two deaths; the allegations remain unproven. Justice Salim Ibrahim granted the prosecution’s request to protect witness identities after the defense raised no objection. The first protected witness said captives were held for 56 days, and the hearing was adjourned until September 18 for cross-examination.
