Australian Study Finds Wider Pharmacy Coverage for Abortion Medication

A newly reported Australian study found that postcodes with a pharmacy stocking the abortion medication MS-2 Step increased from 915 to 1,292 by mid-2025, following changes to prescribing and dispensing restrictions in 2023. La Trobe University researchers led by Professor Kristina Edvardsson examined pharmacy ordering data from the two years before and after the reforms. Coverage among regional postcodes rose from 23% to 35%. Edvardsson said access closer to home reduced travel and stress. University of Technology Sydney researcher Dr Anna Noonan said rural and regional access still needed improvement.
