Madrid Pensioner Maricarmen Abascal Dies at 87 After September Eviction

Courtroom-sketch editorial illustration of an archival May 2022 view of Hospital General Universitario Gregorio Marañón in Madrid, showing its multi-storey exterior, street trees, entrance driveway, small pedestrians and parked white taxis; contextual artwork, not a depiction of Maricarmen Abascal's death or eviction, rendered in warm ochre and slate-blue pastel strokes.

Maricarmen Abascal, 87, died on October 7 at Madrid's Hospital Gregorio Marañón, according to the tenants' union. She had remained hospitalized after being evicted on September 23 from her apartment in the Retiro district, where she had lived for more than 70 years. Her removal on a stretcher became a symbol of Spain's housing crisis and prompted protests. Her family, legal representatives and the union said an agreement that would have allowed her to return home came too late. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez expressed condolences to her family and loved ones.
