Shiranthi Rajapaksa Remanded Until October 13 in Sri Lankan Charity-Funds Probe

Colombo Magistrate's Court remanded Sri Lanka's former first lady Shiranthi Rajapaksa until October 13 after anti-corruption officers arrested her on Wednesday. Officers questioned her at her Colombo residence before producing her in court. The Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption alleges that 10 million Sri Lankan rupees obtained from National Savings Bank through her Siriliya Saviya initiative to provide a CT scanner for Colombo's Lady Ridgeway Hospital for Children were dishonestly misappropriated. Rajapaksa, the wife of former president Mahinda Rajapaksa, denies wrongdoing and maintains that the money has not been appropriated.
