Knesset Gives Initial Approval to Muezzin Noise Bill

The Knesset plenum gave preliminary approval Wednesday to the muezzin noise bill, a proposal by MK Zvika Fogel to regulate amplified mosque loudspeakers through permits, enforcement powers and fines. The vote was 50-36, with Shas and Yisrael Beiteinu backing the bill and United Torah Judaism absent. The proposal now moves to the Knesset Committee before further readings. Muslim prayer deserves respect, and so does the quiet of families living near loudspeakers. Israel should handle the issue through even-handed noise rules, clear permits and protection for freedom of worship.
