Rothman Says Gantz-Linked Reform Compromise Collapsed After He Accepted It

Knesset Constitution Committee chair Simcha Rothman said he was prepared to give up his preferred judicial-overhaul plan for a narrower compromise with broad consensus. In a new interview, he said former minister Izhar Shay and Dedi Simchi brought him a framework linked to Benny Gantz’s party, which he accepted before the party reversed course. Rothman also called it a major mistake to devote the coalition’s first year almost exclusively to the overhaul, saying a broader legislative agenda could have lowered tensions. He said the concentrated push created a public feeling of a ‘putsch,’ while insisting smaller agreed changes were preferable to achieving his full program alone.
