Haifa Completes Pedestrian-Sensing Traffic-Light Pilot

Haifa has completed a two-year pilot of a video-analysis traffic-light system that automatically detects pedestrians and requests a green signal without requiring them to press a button. The trial at 7 Oskar Schindler Street passed the Transportation Ministry's experiments committee, and the municipality plans to expand the system to more intersections. Separate sensors cancel the request if a person leaves or crosses on red and extend green time for slower pedestrians. Haifa recorded 104 pedestrians injured at crosswalks in 2025, including one death and 11 serious injuries, according to road-safety group Or Yarok's analysis of Central Bureau of Statistics data.
