Nairobi Wins 2029 World Athletics Championships in African First

World Athletics awarded Nairobi the 2029 World Athletics Championships, making Kenya’s capital the first African city to host the senior outdoor championships. The World Athletics Council selected Nairobi during its 242nd meeting in Budapest on September 14 and 15, and awarded the 2031 edition to Munich. Nairobi previously hosted the 2017 World U18 Championships and 2021 World U20 Championships. World Athletics President Sebastian Coe said all four candidates submitted outstanding bids and that the decision was not easy. The Nairobi championships are planned for September 2029, after Beijing hosts the next edition in September 2027.
