Family Announces Death of Jewish Pop Artist Peter Max at 88

Peter Max's family announced that the Jewish pop artist died Monday at 88; his son Adam Max gave no cause of death. Born Peter Max Finkelstein in Berlin in 1937, he fled Nazi Germany with his Jewish family as a baby, later lived in Israel and Paris, and settled in New York at 16. Max's vivid psychedelic style became closely associated with 1960s flower-power culture. His artwork appeared on aircraft, ships, postage stamps, posters and consumer products, and he served as official artist for major sporting events.
