Sudan Gold Mine Collapse Toll Rises to 82 as Miners Remain Trapped

At least 82 people were confirmed dead after rescuers recovered 22 more bodies from the collapsed al-Zara artisanal gold mine near al-Nuhud in Sudan's West Kordofan, according to survivor and local official accounts carried by AFP. A local administrator said 50 people were injured and an unknown number remained trapped. Survivors said rescuers lacked heavy machinery and that closely spaced shafts contributed to adjoining collapses. The Sudan Doctors Network had reported more than 67 deaths, while accounts differed on whether the collapse began Sunday or Tuesday night.
