India’s Food Regulator Files Revised Packaged-Food Warning Plan

India’s Food Safety and Standards Authority filed a revised affidavit with the Supreme Court on Wednesday proposing red front-of-pack warnings when a packaged food exceeds the prescribed limit for any one of added sugar, added fat or salt. Its earlier proposal required two nutrients above their limits in the first phase. The filing proposes a single rollout phase, about four months to finalize regulations and 365 days of voluntary compliance for food companies. It also proposes moving the warning for products containing noncaloric sweeteners to the front of packs. The proposals have not yet become binding rules.
