Japan's Yamashita Wins Asian Games Marathon Gold as India's Barwal Sets National Record

Japan's Ichitaka Yamashita won the men's marathon at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games on September 26 in a provisional 2:10:49, racing in 22-degree heat and humidity near 80 percent. India's Sawan Barwal took silver in 2:11:37, a personal best and a new Indian national record, after leading from 10 km to 35 km, according to the Athletics Federation of India. Yamashita, 29, briefly dropped off the lead at 32.5 km, rejoined at 34.7 km and pulled clear of Barwal after 35 km. The win is Japan's first Asian Games men's marathon title since 2018, and Barwal's silver is India's first Asian Games marathon medal in 44 years.
