U.S. Senate Blocks Israel Human Rights Reporting Resolution in 47–51 Vote

The U.S. Senate voted 47–51 on Tuesday against a motion to discharge S.Res. 852, preventing the measure from advancing through that procedure. The resolution, introduced by Senators Chris Van Hollen, Tim Kaine and Bernie Sanders, sought a State Department report on Israel’s human-rights practices in the West Bank under the Foreign Assistance Act. Kaine’s office said the measure would have required the administration to deliver information within 30 days if adopted. Van Hollen and Kaine voted to advance it, while 51 senators opposed the motion and two did not vote. The roll call was a procedural vote, not a vote on final passage.
