Released Federal Notes Detail Economic Risks of Alberta Separation

Courtroom-sketch editorial illustration of an archival June 2024 exterior of the Alberta Legislature Building in Edmonton, with its stone dome, trees and entrance plaza beneath cloudy skies; institutional context, not a depiction of the October 2026 release of federal notes, rendered in warm ochre and slate-blue pastel strokes.

Federal briefing notes released under access-to-information legislation assess a possible C$18 billion fiscal shock and departures of corporate headquarters and skilled workers if Alberta leaves Canada. The heavily redacted Finance Canada and Justice Department documents are dated June 2026. Finance Canada notes say Alberta’s net fiscal contribution averaged roughly C$18 billion annually during 2022–2024 and warn that prolonged uncertainty could prompt headquarters to leave, particularly outside resource industries. Alberta’s October 19 referendum asks whether the province should remain in Canada or begin the legal process for a future binding separation referendum.
