Ireland Players Bow Heads During Hatikvah and Skip Handshakes With Israel

Courtroom-sketch editorial illustration of a plain black-and-white football on an empty background; symbolic football context, not a depiction of the Ireland-Israel match, either team, the anthem ceremony or the stadium in Serbia.

Ireland's players bowed their heads during Israel's national anthem and did not exchange customary handshakes with the Israeli team before Sunday evening's Nations League match in Bačka Topola, Serbia. The traditional exchange of pennants also did not take place. Israel's players observed the Irish anthem and wore black armbands commemorating those murdered in the October 7 massacre, after UEFA approved the tribute. The conduct repeated gestures seen before the teams' first meeting last week in Debrecen, Hungary, where Ireland won 3-0.
