Guinea-Bissau’s Prime Minister Says December 6 Elections Cannot Be Held

Guinea-Bissau’s transitional Prime Minister Ilídio Vieira Té said on October 8 that conditions were absent for presidential and legislative elections scheduled for December 6, 2026. He cited expired leadership mandates within several political parties and a missed October 6 deadline for submitting candidacies to the Supreme Court of Justice. The electoral commission separately said the timetable was technically impracticable because preparation should have begun 90 days before voting and required deadlines had not been met. Both accounts said the official decision on whether to maintain or cancel the date remained with transitional President Horta Inta-A.
