Kast Orders Disaster-Zone Declaration for Las Condes After Santiago Mudslide

President José Antonio Kast instructed a disaster-zone declaration for Las Condes after a mudslide caused extensive damage in the Santiago district on October 8. The government said the designation would facilitate access to resources and coordination among institutions responding to the emergency, following a regional emergency meeting. The mudslide flooded homes, swept away vehicles and affected educational establishments and health facilities. The regional Education authority suspended October 9 classes in all Las Condes educational establishments to protect school communities and facilitate emergency operations.
