South Korea Recalls Ambassador to Ukraine, Says Talks Will Continue

Courtroom-sketch editorial illustration of an archival May 2012 street view of the South Korean embassy in Kyiv, with leafy trees, an ornate arched facade, parked cars and two pedestrians; diplomatic context, not a depiction of the October 2026 ambassador recall or current embassy activity, rendered in warm ochre and slate-blue pastel strokes.

South Korea decided on Thursday to recall its ambassador to Ukraine to the home country. The Foreign Ministry announced the decision in a release dated October 8, 2026. The government said it hoped outstanding issues between the two countries would be resolved amicably. It said consultations with Ukraine would continue toward that end. The brief ministry statement did not identify the ambassador, give a departure date or say how long the recall would last, and it did not state a reason for the decision.
