Brazil’s Judicial Council Suspends Aava Santiago’s Mandate Removal Over AI Concerns

Brazil’s National Council of Justice provisionally suspended an electoral ruling removing Goiânia councillor Aava Santiago from office following her party switch, in an injunction granted by Judge Benedito Gonçalves on Friday night. Her defense pointed to instructions and internal checking notes left in the signed judgment, raising concerns about possible AI use without adequate human review. The electoral court must provide information within 15 days about its procedures and safeguards. The council’s inquiry concerns administrative regularity, human supervision and traceability; the injunction does not definitively annul the judgment or decide the electoral merits of Santiago’s removal.
