Isaias Becomes a Major Hurricane With 120 Mph Winds Before U.S. Gulf Landfall

The National Hurricane Center said Air Force Reserve Hurricane Hunter measurements showed Isaias had strengthened into a major hurricane on Friday, with maximum sustained winds of 120 mph. Its center was about 240 miles south of Pensacola, Florida, and moving north-northeast toward the northern U.S. Gulf Coast. An earlier Friday advisory forecast landfall that night or early Saturday, with hurricane and storm-surge warnings in effect along parts of the coast. The center forecast 4–8 inches of rain across parts of the Southeast through the weekend, with localized totals up to 15 inches.
