Simon Becomes a Hurricane as Mexico Extends Coastal Warning

Courtroom-sketch editorial illustration of an archival December 2006 aerial view of Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, with a curving beach and bay beside coastal hotels and hillside city buildings; coastal context, not a depiction of Hurricane Simon or current conditions, rendered in warm ochre and slate-blue pastel strokes.

Simon became a Category 1 hurricane off Mexico’s Pacific coast with sustained winds of 120 km/h, the National Hurricane Center said in its 03:00 UTC advisory on October 9. Its center was about 380 km south of Manzanillo, and Mexico extended the hurricane warning to cover Punta San Telmo through Punta Mita. The center forecast rapid intensification to Category 4 before Simon approaches the coast on Saturday, October 10. Heavy rain could cause life-threatening flooding and mudslides in parts of Michoacán, Colima and Jalisco through Sunday.
